Tinha planeado escrever algo mais simples sobre este livro, mas o livro é demasiado bom para ficar diminuído à minha preguiça. Não Entres Tão Depressa Nessa Noite Escura foi publicado em Outubro de 2000 e eu envergonho-me de só o ter lido 4 anos depois. A narrativa é esmagadora e ao mesmo tempo é indizível. Há uma personagem central, Maria Clara, com a qual atravessamos os 35 capítulos do livro, divido em 7 partes – os 7 dias da criação. Maria Clara é uma rapariga ingénua que nada sabe sobre a vida: inveja a irmã Ana Maria, lamenta a distância do pai Luís Filipe, observa a família despedaçada em que se insere, inventa-lhe um passado, inventa-lhe vários passados na tentativa de descobrir os segredos da família guardados num sótão escuro e coberto de pó.
Com Maria Clara somos convidados a entrar na casa do Estoril com as fotografias do senhor general e do Presidente Krüger cobertas de pó nas prateleiras e a partilhar as suas fantasias, as suas invenções, a inocência na forma de diário.
Com Maria Clara vamos conhecer a avó com a boininha ridícula que apostava a fortuna da família no casino, a empregada Adelaide que a escoltava para todo o lado, os pretos e os árabes que invadiam os corredores da casa, o distante pai Luís Filipe que agoniza na clínica onde o seu coração desenha adeuses no ecrã da máquina.
Com Maria Clara vamos conhecer Leopoldina e o andar em Alcoitão, as camionetas do Murtal, os últimos dias do avô cego.
E no meio de tudo Maria Clara descobre o seu corpo, as suas formas, fica estática diante do espelho a observar-se. Maria Clara descobre-se e nós descobrimo-nos também, assistindo ao desmoronar de uma família onde se desconhecem uns aos outros. No final, nas últimas linhas do último capítulo, uma Maria Clara adulta e infeliz confessa-nos: «Há momentos na vida em que necessitamos tanto de um sorriso. À falta de melhor toco-me com o dedo no vidro.»
Não Entres Tão Depressa Nessa Noite Escura não é com certeza um livro fácil de ler para quem não conhece a escrita de Lobo Antunes – o título é uma tradução livre de um verso de Dylan Thomas: Do not go gentle into that good night – mas fica um conselho: abram a alma entrem no livro com o espanto de quem se olha a um espelho e percebe já não ser o mesmo.

I was about to write something more simple about this book but it is too much good to be diminished by my laziness. Do Not Go So Fast Into That Dark Night was published in October of 2000 and I’m ashamed of having read it just 4 years later. The narrative is smashing and at the same time it is unspeakable. There is a main character, Maria Clara, with whom we cross the 35 chapters of the book, divided in 7 parts - the 7 days of Creation. Maria Clara is a young and naive girl that knows nothing about life: she is envious of her sister Ana Maria, she regrets the distance of the father Luís Filipe, she observes how the family she belongs torn into pieces, she creates a past to her family, she creates several pasts to her family in the attempt to discover the hidden secrets of the family in a dark attic covered with dust.
With Maria Clara we are invited to come in the house of Estoril(1) with the photographs of the General and President Krüger covered with dust in the shelves and to share her fantasies, her concoctions, her innocence in the shapes of diary.
With Maria Clara we will know the grandmother with the ridiculous little cap that bet the richness of the family in the casino, the servant Adelaide who escorted her to every place, the Blacks and the Arabs that invaded the halls of the house, the father Luís Filipe who agonizes in the clinic where his heart draws farewells in the screen of the machine.
With Maria Clara we will know Leopoldina and the flat in Alcoitão(2), the light trucks to Murtal(3), the last days of the blind grandfather.
Meanwhile Maria Clara discovers her body, her forms, she stays static in front of the mirror to look at herself. Maria Clara is getting to know herself and we are getting to know ourselves too, seeing the pulling down of a family where nobody knows each other. In the end, in the last lines of the last chapter, an adult and unhappy Maria Clara confesses: «There are moments in life we need a smile so much. For want of better I touch myself with the finger in the glass.»
Do Not Go So Fast Into That Dark Night is not certainly an easy book to read for those who doesn’t know peculiar style of Lobo Antunes - the title is a free translation of a Dylan Thomas’ verse: Do not go gentle into that good night - but here is an advice: open your soul and go into the book with the astonishment of whom is looking to the mirror and realizes that is no longer the same.

António Lobo Antunes nasceu em Lisboa a 1.Set.1942. Apesar de ter decidido ser escritor quando tinha apenas 7 anos, o seu pai matriculou-o na Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa. Durante este período ele nunca parou de escrever. No fim do curso rumou a Angola como médico militar (1970). Foi aí, no hospital militar, que Lobo Antunes tomou consciência da morte e dos outros. Voltou de África em 1973 e após ter trabalhado alguns meses na Alemanha e Bélgica, voltou a Portugal e publicou o seu primeiro romance em 1979 – Memória de Elefante – em que conta a história do seu divórcio em 1976. Devido ao sucesso dos seus primeiros romances, António Lobo Antunes decide pôr de parte a Medicina para dedicar todo o seu tempo à literatura. Ele assumiu-se como um autor essencial no panorama da narrativa contemporânea, sendo considerado um dos escritores mais importantes da Literatura Ocidental. A beleza da sua prosa, o seu detalhe e o seu rigor, bem como a complexa arquitectura dos seus romances fazem dele um dos mais inteligentes e sedutores escritores da segunda metade do século XX. O seu nome foi várias vezes apontado como favorito para a atribuição do Prémio Nobel da Literatura.
Não Entres Tão Depressa Nessa Noite Escura é o seu 14.º romance.

António Lobo Antunes was born in Lisbon in 1.Sep.1942. Despite of having decided to be a writer at the age of 7, his father inscribed him in the Lisbon's Faculty of Medicine. During this time he never stopped writing. By the end of the course he had to join the Army, to take place in the colonial war in Angola (1970). It was there, in a military hospital, that Lobo Antunes become conscious of both death and the others. He came back from Africa in 1973. After having worked some months in Germany and Belgium he came back to Portugal and in 1979 he published his first novel - Elephant's Memory - where he told the story of his divorce in 1976. Due to the success of his first novels António Lobo Antunes decided to give up Medicine and devote all his time to literature. He has assumed himself as an essential author in contemporary narrative, being considered one of the most important writers in contemporary Western literature. The beauty of his prose, his detail and rigor, as well as the complex architecture of his novels make him among the most intelligent and appealing writers of the second half of the 20th century. His name was discussed as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Do Not Go So Fast Into That Dark Night is his 14th novel.
